If you have been appointed by the will of a friend, relative or loved one to serve as personal representative upon his or her death, yours is an important role because, upon your acceptance of such an appointment, you are a “fiduciary.” In short, that means you have a lot of responsibility to a lot of different people called “interested parties.” These may include heirs of the decedent’s estate, creditors of the decedent and, of course, the IRS and the state’s department of revenue.
